Bet On MLB – Young Guns Slated To Duel On Tuesday

Tommy Hanson (8-4, 2.48) has been off since June 12th because of shoulder trouble, but his last outing was a brilliant one in a 4-1 victory in Houston, allowing a run on three hits over seven innings. This is Hanson’s third full season in the majors, and he made the jump from 127.2 innings in 2009 to 202.2 innings in 2010, so that has to be watched in the coming weeks. The 24-year-old has never faced the Mariners before, but he is 4-2 in seven starts on the road with a 2.57 ERA.

Michael Pineda (7-4, 2.45) was unfortunate to earn a no-decision in a 1-0 loss in Washington, tossing a four-hit shutout over seven innings with nine strikeouts and a walk, and he held the Nationals hitless for the first 5.2 innings of the game, but he was let down by an anemic offense and his bullpen. At 6’7”, 260, Pineda is an imposing figure on the found, but he has surprising touch for a 22-year-old and he has allowed a run or less in half of his last 10 starts. Pineda will obviously be facing the Braves for the first time, and he is 4-1 in seven home starts with a 1.99 ERA.

If this were an NFL pick, this would be a matchup of two young quarterbacks who are coming up in the majors, and it should be a low-scoring affair as these two rank in the bottom third of the league in terms of runs. The Mariners should be a small favorite at home, where they took two of three from the Braves back in 2003. All three games went under the posted total, and there is no reason to believe that this game will also be lacking in firepower, at least when it comes to the bats. The pitchers will be the focus at Safeco Field, which is tailored towards the hurlers as it is, so expect the under in this contest. Hanson may be slightly rusty for the Braves on Tuesday, which is why the edge goes to Seattle in your betting book.
